Francisco Alvarez needs surgery for a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb. But New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza says there's a chance the slugging catcher can play through the pain.

In light of Francisco Alvarez landing on the Injured List, the Mets are recalling Hayden Senger from Triple-A Syracuse.

The Mets are hopeful that he can play through the pain for the rest of the season, but Mendoza acknowledged that his year would be over if not.
