With the NHL trade deadline less than a week away, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving might have revealed his true cards with a disappointing statement for most franchise fans. Treliving appeared to temper fans' expectations for a major move ahead of the March 7 deadline after the Leafs were linked to some high-profile players in the past few days.

The NHL Trade deadline is less than a week away and for the Toronto Maple Leafs, it’s now crunch time to make a deal and push them forward in a competitive Atlantic Division.

Treliving spoke to the media Saturday in Pittsburgh, and it sounds like adding one of the more impactful players available is less likely.

With the NHL trade deadline set to hit on Friday, the Leafs are looking to bolster their centre depth. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, it appears that one of the options they are considering is Schenn, who currently has 12 goals and 37 points in 61 games this season.

Schenn, 33, has 12 goals and 24 assists in 60 games this season but he's considered the best player available ahead of the trade deadline. He captains his team, won the Stanley Cup under current Leafs head coach Craig Berube in 2019, and is not a rental.

There are reasons to think Schenn would be a good fit with Toronto, but is he the best fit ahead of next week's trade deadline? Maybe not.
