The United Nations has urged India and Pakistan to show "maximum restraint" following a deadly attack in Pahalgam, India-held Kashmir. The shooting, which killed 26 tourists and injured 17 others, has triggered a serious diplomatic standoff between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

Relations between India and Pakistan are cratering following a deadly militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that has sparked tit-for-tat reprisals and raised fears of another military escalation between the nuclear-armed rivals.

The attack comes after years of relative peace, punctuated only by relatively minor violence, something that the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has attributed to improved security in Kashmir ever since the revocation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution in 2019, which gave the then-state of Jammu and Kashmir additional autonomy.
