Riley Greene is approaching the point in his career where the Detroit Tigers have to make a more consequential decision than simply penciling his name into the middle of the lineup.

Greene homered twice and drove in four runs, while Valdez pitched seven scoreless innings in the Tigers’ 6-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday night at Progressive Field. The Tigers (65-77) can salvage a split of the four-game series with the Guardians (72-71) in Sunday’s finale.

The Guardians threatened just once in the game. David Fry and Angel Genao opened the second with singles. Petey Halpin advanced them with a bunt, but Valdez retired the next two batters to end the threat. The Tigers out-hit the Guardians, 11-3. It was only Detroit’s fifth win in the last 21 games.
