McGovern’s remarks followed a trip with Sen. Ed Markey and Rep. Ayanna Pressley to a U.S. Customs and Immigration Detention Center in Louisiana to visit Tufts University student Rumeysa Ozturk. Ozturk’s detention, the group said, violates her rights as legal resident of the United States and a human being.

Three Massachusetts lawmakers have returned from Louisiana, where they met with a Tufts student being detained by ICE at a detention center, and said they will continue to fight for her release from prison.

Lawmakers visited facilities in Louisiana where the Trump administration is holding immigrants, including Tufts doctoral student Rümeysa Özturk and Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil.
