The loss couldn’t come at a worse time for Vandy. No. 11 Vanderbilt (7-2, 3-2 in SEC) entered the week eyeing a spot in the College Football Playoff. Now on Nov. 4 when the first CFP rankings come out, Vanderbilt could very well be outside looking in.

What looked like a Texas blowout became very close at the end. But the Longhorns, led by Arch Manning held off Vanderbilt 34-31.

Vanderbilt trailed all game but came alive in the fourth quarter to nearly pull off the comeback. The Commodores cut the lead to three points with eight seconds remaining, but were unable to recover the onside kick to give Texas the 34-31 victory.

As strong of a performance as Vanderbilt has put up this season, Texas has been a disappointment. But the Longhorns match up well with the Commodores. Texas has the SEC's top run defense and a stout defensive line. On that side of the ball, the Longhorns are similar to Missouri, the only team that has managed to shut Pavia down this season.
