Three hurricanes are sweeping across the Pacific Ocean and one could dump 10 inches of rain on two Hawaiian islands.

The storm has intensified quickly since becoming a hurricane Sunday and has been fueled by warm waters far offshore, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Hurricane Lowell intensified to a Category 5 storm Wednesday in the Pacific Ocean and is expected to remain a powerful hurricane over the next several days, the National Hurricane Center said. The center of the cyclone was located about 445 miles (715 kilometers) south of Hilo,

Hurricane Karina formed in the Pacific on Sunday and strengthened into a major Category 4 storm Monday morning.

Several major hurricanes are sweeping across the Pacific, threatening Hawaii and the coastal regions even as a tropical storm made landfall on the Gulf Coast.

Despite Karina’s power, it is not the strongest hurricane in the Pacific this season. That honor goes to Hurricane Genevieve, which peaked as a Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds in late July. Genevieve never directly affected land.

The National Hurricane Center is tracking no fewer than nine storms and potential disturbances as the peak of hurricane season arrives.
