KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — U.S. forecasters issued a hurricane warning for Jamaica Saturday as Storm Melissa reached hurricane strength, threatening catastrophic flooding in the northern Caribbean. A hurricane warning means winds of at least 74 mph (119 kph) are expected in the area within 36 hours.
The storm was forecast to dump up to 25 inches of rain over Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica as it continues to strengthen this weekend.

Melissa strengthens into Category 1 hurricane in the Caribbean
Hurricane Melissa continues to have our attention in the Caribbean as it's anticipated to undergo rapid intensification. The storm became a hurricane Saturday afternoon.
Hurricane Melissa has formed in the central Caribbean, with the National Hurricane Center reporting winds of 75 mph as of their 2 p.m. advisory. Melissa, currently a Category 1 hurricane, is likely to intensify quickly because of the warm waters in the area.
