Loot boxes are back in Overwatch 2, but they’re not exactly hitting players with that rush of nostalgia Blizzard probably hoped for. Instead of rekindling fond memories of the OG loot box openings, players are finding the whole experience underwhelming.

Love them or hate them, Overwatch 2 has made a bold decision as it enters its 15th season of competitive play: Loot boxes are back in the game.

Overwatch 2 took a massive beating when it finally hit Steam two years ago, with thousands of negative user reviews reacting to the still-fresh cancellation of its PvE mode. The hero shooter hasn't managed to shed its negative rating since then, but Blizzard's sweeping season 15 changes are seemingly starting to reverse some of that damage.

Overwatch 2 has just brought back loot boxes, and while players are glad they’re back, they’ve noticed there’s one “issue” with them.

Instead, loot boxes will return as part of Overwatch 2's seasonal free and premium battle passes, as well as rewards for weekly and event challenges. Blizzard is looking to bring more transparency to the system as well, giving players more information in regards to item-drop chances and rarity guarantees.
