The 30-year-old Davis, who is undefeated and was a heavy favorite, took a knee in the middle of the ninth round before retreating to his corner, where a member of his team wiped his face with a towel.

Roach exchanged with the hard hitter from Baltimore, even wobbling him, and many big names in the sport believe he did enough to win. That should have been the case had referee Steve Willis called a knockdown in the ninth round when Davis took a knee. He didn’t, however, despite starting a count on the night.

The key moment happened in round nine when, having been hit by a punch from Roach, Davis then waited a moment before taking a knee. He then rushed to his corner and asked for his face to be wiped, later saying that “grease” from his hair was “burning” his eyes.
