The Chicago school board voted to keep open all of the seven schools slated for closure in the Acero Charter Network through the end of the 2025-26 school year.

A School Board vote in December had spared seven Acero schools from closure for a year and promised to absorb five of them in 2026. But after extensive debate, the board determined two campuses should close this spring.

The plan overrides the charter network's plan to shutter half of its schools. The change came after CPS officials warned that helping Acero keep all seven campuses could violate state law and be financially risky for CPS.

There is a chance the three schools could close in a resolution before the Chicago Board of Education on Thursday, which would affect thousands of students.

The vote will come after months of uncertainty for hundreds of students and teachers who had pressed the district to save all seven Acero schools slated for closure.

At a rally to save Acero Charter Schools slated for closure, families and community members voiced their anxieties after a parent was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Officials while they were taking their children to school Wednesday morning.

The 21-member board at its monthly meeting Thursday voted to amend language in a revised resolution that would now aim to save five Acero schools: Cisneros, Casas, Fuentes, Tamayo and Santiago.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement defended arresting the man who had just dropped off a child at Jovita Idár Elementary.

The Acero Schools community is on edge after immigration agents detained an adult Wednesday near Soto High School and Idar Elementary at the start of the school day.

Two students were with the adult outside the Southwest Side school Wednesday morning, officials said. "It is really terrifying for families and traumatizing for students," one observer said.
