Hurricane Lowell is expected to produce additional rainfall totals of 6 to 10 inches for Kauai, with a possible maximum total of 16 inches. On the Big Island, 4 to 8 inches of rain is expected, with isolated totals of 12 inches possible.

Hurricane Lowell was skirting western Hawaii, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain and punishing waves, the National Hurricane Center said.

First Alert Forecast: Rain, high winds and big surf as Lowell passes

Dangerously high surf generated by the hurricane will peak overnight for south facing shores. Once Lowell passes, high pressure will build back in Thursday through Saturday, allowing more typical trade wind conditions to return. However, it will take a few more days for the weather to dry out.
