Why are invasive blue catfish a problem in the Chesapeake Bay? I went to the fish cutting room JJ McDonnell & Co., Inc. to sample the stomachs of fish for a photograph of blue catfish diet caught in the upper Chesapeake. My “data” shows that they aren’t picky eaters. They are eating everything from the shellfish in the bottom to the fish swimming in the top of the water column. 🎥 Middleton Media #chesapeakebay #workingthewater #seafood #maryland #bluecatfish #virginia #sustainablefisheries #inv

I have been getting a lot of questions this spring about how to rig up a trot line to catch invasive blue catfish. This video briefly explains the 15$ finfish trotline license that is available through Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries to harvest blue and flathead catfish. For more information on the license and how to get it, click the link below: https://dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/Documents/CatfishTrotlinePilot2022.pdf If you care about preserving the health of the Chesapeake

Hand tonging for wild oysters in Eastern Bay this morning near Kent Narrows. Nothing is more iconic to the Chesapeake than this timeless way of harvesting oysters off the bottom. As the water temperatures drop, the oysters are fattening up for the winter. Now is the best time to eat wild caught oysters and keep the watermen employed throughout the winter months. | Jay Fleming

I spent the morning on the Chesapeake Bay with Glenn Blough and water-woman Rachel Fazenbaker - a hardworking and dedicated team. The pictures and video will be used to share their story about making freshly harvested wild caught seafood easily accessable. What they catch is available to the consumer directly from the boat. The oysters harvested this morning in Tangier Sound are already at the Blough's Seafood retail shop in Denton, MD for super bowl weekend. I ate a few on the boat and in the s

When the tides flow against the wind, conditions get rough in the Bay of Fundy. Some parts of the bay see a tidal range of up to 53 feet. While out on the lobstering shoot during my workshop, we had a flood tide pushing water against a northeast wind. It got pretty choppy in a few of the tidal rips near West Quoddy Light off Lubec, Maine. All of the photographers on board lived to tell the tale and experienced what it is like to work on the water in rough conditions. | Jay Fleming

Fossilized scallop shells from the Miocene epoch deposited along the base of the eroding cliffs on Chesapeake Bay in Calvert County. This extinct species of scallop - Chesapecten nefrens - is commonly found along the shoreline at the base of the cliffs. These shells are estimated to be between 12 and 15 million years old. We could have filled my boat with scallops shells on Saturday’s trip to the cliffs. So many shells had been exposed from the wind driven erosion this fall. The best time to hun

Lobster boats race to the best fishing grounds in the Bay of Fundy after the 7am start of the season off Campobello Island. These boats were carrying up to 30,000 pounds of traps, anchors and other gear - amazing to watch them plow through the water as they so close together. The fastest boats get access to the best spots in the area that is open to lobstering. Once the traps were all set, they gave them a 12-hour soak and went back out to haul. | Jay Fleming

The pound net fishery for Menhaden is an extremely important component of the Blue Crab fishery. Menhaden are used as bait by crab potters up and down the Chesapeake Bay. For 'Working the Water' I photographed pound netters throughout the Bay - as far north as the Sassafras River and south to Fishermans Island. Pound Netting is by far one of the most photogenic and interesting gear types used on the Chesapeake Bay. www.jayflemingphotography.com | Jay Fleming, Photographer

Snorkeling at a sea lion colony was an awesome and humbling experience. The juveniles were incredibly playful and would come right up and check you out, while the big bull males (that grow up to ~800 pounds) lurk in the distance keeping an eye on their territory. These animals are clumsy and slow on land but are incredibly fast in the water. Being in the water with this group of sea lions was a great way to wrap up the underwater photography and snorkeling portion of the workshop in the Galápago

All of the blue catfish that we have been catching are being sold to seafood retailers and restaurants. These wild caught fish debunk the stereotype of catfish meat having the flavor of a bottom feeder. The pearly white meat in blue catfish is incredibly mild and holds up to many different styles of cooking. I took a catfish that was less than 24 hours out of the water to LEO Annapolis to see what chef Matt Lego could do with it - the result was great! Check out the link below from Maryland's Be

Fishing guide Zack Hoisington and I wanted to learn more about the invasive blue catfish in the Chesapeake Bay. This spring we both got our commercial trot line licenses and started fishing just north of Annapolis - we were shocked with the abundance of fish right in our backyard and used this as an opportunity to get others involved. We took out restaurant owners, chefs, students and people from the community to educate them on the threats that these fish present to the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem
